The different types of insomnia sleeping disorder has been becoming a serious concern for physicians and sleep specialists. With lifestyles getting busier day by day, there have been an increasing number of insomnia sleeping disorders among people.

An adult should have an uninterrupted sleep of at least eight hours per day. The sleep requirements generally vary from person to person but what is important is that the sleep should be sound and peaceful. Occasionally, almost everyone can find it difficult to sleep for some or the other apparent reason. If however, one is not able to sleep for longer period of time on a frequent basis, then he may be suffering from insomnia sleeping disorder.

Insomnia sleeping disorder type can vary from transient to acute and chronic types depending upon the duration for which sleeplessness persists. Altered sleep patterns due to jet lags, caffeine or alcohol intake generally vanish within a period of a day or few days. This is the symptom for transient insomnia. However, in cases of acute or chronic insomnia the person may have sleeping problems for periods ranging from weeks to months or even longer.

Causes of different types of insomnia sleeping disorder

Insomnia can be caused due to a number of reasons including stress, anxiety, depression etc. Apart from this, there are certain type of insomnia sleeping disorders caused due to immature nervous system that can lead to episodes of waking up in between sleep. Sleep apnea and Parasomnia are the most common causes of insomnia sleeping disorder.

Sleep Apnea is a type of insomnia sleeping disorder where the breathing of the sleeping person is interrupted for fewer or longer periods thereby forcing the person to get up at intervals. The most common sleep apnea is the obstructive sleep apnea where the breathing passage gets obstructed for a short interval. The person emits typical sounds such as snoring while sleeping and may actually be unaware of his behavior. In case of Parasomnia, the person is awakened from sleep by conditions such as nightmares, night terrors, sleepwalking, teeth grinding etc. Parasomnia occurs because of the brain getting active at inappropriate times during the sleep-wake cycle.

Treatments for insomnia sleeping disorder include behavioral therapies or medications to promote relaxation and sleep. Behavioral or cognitive treatments emphasizes on learning new sleep behaviors and ways that are more conducive to the sleeping environment and result in deep sleep. Behavioral therapies are effective and at times these used in combination with prescribed sleeping medications.

For acute and chronic types of insomnia sleeping disorder, the physician can at times advice sedatives or sleeping pills so that the patient can catch some good sleep. Drugs such as Temazepam, Diazepam, Lorazepam, Flurazepam, Nitrazepam and Midazopam have tranquilizing effect and can be used. However, use of sleeping pills is discouraged as these can have negative side effects and the goal is to establish a regular sleeping pattern without continued medication.
